The Rio de la Plata Revolution was a conflict that fought for the independence of the region that resulted in the independence of present day Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In the 1800s, Spanish colonies like the Rio de la Plata, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, among others, were influenced by the Enlightenment. For the Rio de la plata, this was due to the dislike of the people being controlled by their colonial power, Spain, and wanting to rebel against all the restrictions they set as a government in their colonies. In terms of economic matters, people disliked restrictions like; trading with foreigners, growing crops that competed with crops grown in Spain, making goods that competed with Spain's goods, and taxes imposed by Spanish authority. During the 1800’s South America were influenced by the Enlightenment and the French revolution. The people disliked Spain they implemented restrictions on them, such as trading with foreigners, growing crops that would compete with crops in Spain, making goods that would compete against Spanish goods and taxes were imposed. Creoles, descendants of spanish blood, lived under Spanish rule and had to follow traditional Spanish rule in their country. The families of Spaniard officials had a high status and authority.
In Europe a French conqueror, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769- France) had taken over Spain and had put his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in charge. The colonists saw this as a sign of weakness by the spanish and also as an opportunity to gain independence while their main focus was in Europe.

José de San Martín (1778-1850) was an Argentine soldier who helped lead the revolution against Spain by influencing the colonists with the idea of independence. His plan was to attack the viceroyalty of Lima by crossing the Andes Mountains, causing a part of South America to become independent from Spain.

Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844) was Napoleon Bonaparte's older brother. He was the king of Spain from 1808 to 1813. His rule in Spain incluenced shaped the revolution since Spain and Europe was the focus and the point of interest over the colonies in the Americas.
