1. How did the Enlightenment influence the Age of Revolution?
The Enlightenment was a time period were philosophers from different countries expressed themselves by creating new ideas of what they thought of an “ideal” government. This influenced many different Revolutions such as the Rio de la Plata Revolution, Glorious Revolution, and American Revolution. The Rio de la Plata Revolution was influenced by San Martin. He was an Argentine soldier that thought that the colonial power of Spain was an unjust type of government. For this reason he wanted to rebel against the viceroys and become independent form Spain. John Locke, a famous philosopher during the Enlightenment period, influenced the American Revolution. His ideas of a successful government influenced the American people to become independent by believing that his thoughts were fair enough to take them into consideration to be their new type of government and rebel against their colonial power, Britain. This shows that if this people wouldn’t have shared their opinion, many colonies would not have been inspired by them, therefore they wouldn’t have rebelled against the colonial powers and gain independence form them.
2. The French Revolution was a major world event. Not only did it topple the French monarchy, it caused a ripple effect around the world. How did the French revolution cause other Revolutions?
The French Revolution was a major world event that caused various colonies to rebel against their main colonial powers. The Rio de la Plata Revolution, The Haitian Revolution, and the Brazilian Revolution were revolutions that were inspired by the French to become independent. For The Rio de la Plata Revolution, Napoleon was responsible for the influence coming from France. Napoleon Bonaparte was a French conqueror that had taken over Spain and put his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in charge. The colonists saw this as a sign of weakness by the Spanish and also as an opportunity to gain independence while their main focus was in Europe. Another Revolution influenced by the French Revolution was the Haitian Revolution. When the French peoples’ rights were opressed by the monarchs, they decided to rebel. They got rid of the Spanish government and finally got their rights, but the slaves’ were still the same. This made people rebel again for the slaves’ rights and ended up winning, getting their independence. Lastly, the Brazilian Revolution was influenced by the French Revolution when France conquered Spain. When Spain was a part of France, Portugal was threatened too. This caused the royal family in Portugal to leave Portugal and flee to Brazil. They left Pedro, the son of the king, in charge of Portugal while the king still went back to check on the revolts. Since Pedro was supported by many people, they ended up wanting Brazil to become independent and influenced Brazil to become independent. This three examples show how important and influential France was at the time of Revolutions, specially for Argentina, Haiti, and Brazil.
3. Inequality- social, political and economic- often causes revolutions. What role did inequality play in the age of revolutions?
Inequality played a big role in different revolutions like the New Granada Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Haitian Revolution. This is because people revolt for equal rights, a fair government, and the end of social injustice. The New Granada Revolution was caused in the 1800’s when the social injustice given to the Creoles was seen as discrimination for being treated and labelled worse than what slaves were. This injustice led to the revolt of the Creoles and this eventually got them to the actual revolution. The French Revolution was caused because of the abuse of the government, that was at that time an absolute monarchy. France had been in a terrible economical state because of the 7 years war and this cause the government to put expensive taxes on the people. This was unfair for the people because not all of them were so wealthy and were able to pay everything that the government needed. Lastly, the Haitian Revolution was caused by slavery. People lived in terrible conditions, were treated brutally, and pretty much wanted to get their rights back. When they realised that they were being so mistreated, and that the French Revolution won, they were inspired to get their rights and become independent as well as the French.
4. Overall, what caused these populations to risk life and future by rebelling against the government. In other words: why did these revolutions take place, and why did so many of them take place during this period.
Many of these revolutions took place because the people wanted to rebel against their government established by the colonial power. Most of these revolts were due to the fact that people were inspired by Enlightenment thinkers. The revolutions were successful when people saw that philosophers had better ideas than their actual government. John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Baron Montesquieu, and Jean Jacques Rousseau were the 4 main philosophers of the time period, and still have an influence on the government countries choose today. The books they published showed people the opinion of these thinkers and gave them hope that one day their countries’ government was not going to be corrupt. This motivation got them to think that they were going to gain independence and free themselves from either Spain, Britain, Portugal, or France. These countries lost all their power over their colonies when the people they had conquered revolted against them strongly.
